The Importance of Experience and Openness in Everyday Decisions

Image
Over the weekend, I had a thought-provoking conversation with my uncle. We discussed how people reason and apply wisdom in their everyday lives. We both agreed that experience plays a vital role in shaping our decisions. As Ralph Waldo Emerson wisely said, "Life is a succession of lessons which must be lived to be understood." Yet, we also recognize that if experiences are not correctly applied, they can lead to poor judgment or even foolishness. My uncle shared an encounter he had with a salesgirl at a store, which vividly illustrated our discussion. He approached her to inquire about the price of a pack of toilet rolls. She informed him that the pack, containing six rolls, was priced at NGN4500. Curious, he then asked for the price of a single roll, to which she responded NGN500. Surprised by the discrepancy, my uncle pointed out that if one roll costs NGN500, the total for six rolls should logically be NGN3000, not NGN4500. However, the salesgirl disagreed, insisting...

LOVE BOMBING: WHEN AFFECTION BECOMES A SNARE

Image
In the delicate fabric of love, Dupe found herself entangled in a web meticulously woven by the charming Bambo. His initial approach mirrored an angelic presence in her life, showering her with kindness, gifts, and an ever-present availability. It marked a clear departure from her past experiences, and for a while, she reveled in the warmth of his affection. The early days were a euphoric dance of love bombing - a term used to describe an overwhelming display of affection and attention designed to sweep someone off their feet. Dupe felt like the luckiest person alive, basking in Bambo's constant calls, thoughtful gifts, and genuine concern for her well-being. However, as the relationship deepened, the once celestial glow began to cast shadows. Bambo's behavior underwent a transformation, and the paradise Dupe had found herself in gradually morphed into a labyrinth of control. The love-bombing facade gave way to possessiveness, manifested in questioning her every move, scrutini...

NAVIGATING THE UNCHARTED WATERS OF FRIENDSHIP: SEEKING CLOSURE

Image
In the ebb and flow of life, friendships can be the anchors that keep us grounded. Yet, what happens when the tides change unexpectedly, and the friend who was once a steady presence becomes an enigma of distant silence? This is a journey I found myself embarking on a journey to find closure when a cherished connection took an unexpected turn. It all started with a subtle shift in the wind, a change in the rhythm of our conversations. My friend, who had always been warm and approachable, suddenly became a mirage of the person I once knew. At first, it might be the natural ephemerality of relationships, the occasional plateau that precedes a deeper connection. Little did I know that the tempest of change was brewing beneath the surface. Attempts to reach out became a futile exercise. Texts echoed into the void, emails remained unanswered, and calls were met with an eerie silence. It was as if a veil had been drawn between us, and I found myself standing on the precipice of uncertainty. ...

EMBRACING SILENCE: NURTURING THE AUTHENTIC VOICE OF LESS EXPRESSIVE WOMEN

Image
In the opus of life, each person contributes a unique note, a melody that makes the ensemble complete. However, society often insists that everyone should sing in the same pitch. Today, let's talk about the women who prefer a quieter tune and how we can encourage a more harmonious world that celebrates the diversity of expression. Have you ever sat across from someone who speaks volumes with just a glance or a thoughtful pause? Being less expressive doesn't mean lacking emotion or depth. It's about embracing the richness of individuality, where silence can be as powerful as words. Every human must understand that quietness isn't a sign of weakness or disinterest. There are various factors influencing a woman's expressive nature - personality traits, cultural backgrounds, past experiences, and societal expectations. It's essential to peel back the layers and understand the unique journey each person is on. Imagine a world where conversations are a gentle dance, w...

LETTING GO OF WHAT YOU CANNOT CHANGE

Image
Mastering the art of letting go of what you cannot change is a transformative skill that paves the way for a life filled with peace and fulfillment. As humans, it's natural to cling to the past and harbor concerns about the future. However, dwelling on elements beyond our control inevitably leads to stress, anxiety, and even depression. The first crucial step toward letting go of the unchangeable is embracing REALITY . It involves acknowledging that certain events have occurred or will transpire, irrespective of our emotional response. Recognizing that we cannot alter the past or dictate the future is liberating; attempting otherwise only fuels frustration and disappointment. Once we have accepted reality, the next step is to FOCUS on the present moment. This means letting go of regrets about the past and worries about the future, and instead focusing on what we can do right now to make our lives better. This might mean setting goals, practicing self-care, or simply enjoying the s...

NAVIGATING THE KNOTHOLES: A JOURNEY THROUGH PAIN TO PURPOSE

Image
In the quaint town of Ekiti, a woman named Ada faced an unimaginable challenge that left her staring into the abyss of pain. Ada, a devoted mother and wife, was struck by a sudden and severe illness that altered the course of her life. The weight of physical suffering, coupled with the emotional toll on her family, became the proverbial knothole through which she struggled to make sense of her world. According to the dictionary, a knothole is a void left by a knot in the wood; such holes are often convenient for peering through when they occur in fences. Ada found herself peering through the knothole of her pain, unable to see beyond the immediate struggle of her illness. She grappled with questions of purpose, the fairness of life's twists, and the harsh reality of her newfound vulnerability. The Knothole Analogy: Ada's journey reflects the profound analogy of looking through the knothole. Her life, once a smoothly crafted fence of routine and joy, now bore the interruptions o...

A FULL HOUSEWIFE, A HELPMEET OR BOTH?

Image
Feminist have come up with theories expressing the need for gender equality between a man and a woman. Although most of these theories have been countered several times, we can’t still rule out the fact that the position of a woman in the family, society and nation is a great one. Permit me to say women are the salt of the world. They make life sweeter when they are added in the right proportion and when treated otherwise you can imagine what the result will be. Without their presence everything becomes sour. The position of a woman in a home cannot be overemphasized, they run and manage the affairs of the home which include taking care of the husband, children, cooking meals, attending to guests and extended family members, buying items needed for everyday life and the list is endless. Although some husbands try as much as they can to help out in doing some of these things while some totally feel it’s the duty of a wife and they never help out. The attitudes of some of thes...

SELF-WORTH ALERT

Image
Hey You 🙋🙋, I know you are upset because ‘they’ didn’t choose you. ‘They’ have a less mentality of you. Just know that whatever they choose OVER you was less than what they had WITH you. So stop trying to make people who don’t have ability to handle expensive gift choose you because when they do, they won’t know what to do with you. There is something called SELF-WORTH, it is an internal state of being that comes from self-understanding, self-love and self-acceptance. Abraham Lincoln wrote “it is difficult to make a man miserable while he feels worthy of himself”. So please have a high level of self-worth instead of getting upset.

ANGER

Image
Mike a young Christian guy who is deeply convinced about a lady (Grace) he intends to settle down with has been given a test of patience that is unknown to him. He felt all the processes he has to go through before getting a solid “yes” from Grace was just too much. He has never experienced a Christian dating or courtship before; the rules were just too much for him. Pastor O asked Mike to give him a call so they could discuss more his plans and intentions towards his spiritual daughter. Mike made several attempts to reach Pastor O on call but he wasn’t picking up. He tried severally and when he got fed up, he reported the situation to Grace. She asked Mike to calm down but he got so upset and felt Pastor O’s attitude was uncalled for. He kept saying all kinds of words out of anger and this caused a great misunderstanding between Mike and Grace. Mike out of anger sent a rude message to Pastor O and the rest was history. The message caused a lot of problem for Mike an...

SISTER'S KEEPER

Image
In reality, the belief that women secretly hate one another has a long history. For centuries, women were pronounced incapable of “true friendship”. Rather than enjoying the long-lasting friendships found among men, bonds between women were depicted as short-lived, unable to withstand women’s quarrelsome natures. Many believe female who occupy influential positions are tougher on women employees, reluctant to help others shatter the glass ceiling for fear of losing their own privileged position. This is not supposed to be. Sometimes, we forget how easy it is to be our sister’s keeper. On one of my short visits to Lagos, I decided to visit  a friend of mine who stays around Iyana-Ipaja axis. I got to the bus station where I was to board a bus going to my destination and realized a bus was loading already. I didn’t feel like entering the bus because it was big so I decided to go for a smaller bus. As I was about entering the bus, I noticed there was a strong argument going on a...

BITTERNESS

Image
Adedeji was an adorable young man, he was hardworking and full of energy. He has his own funny sides and I’ll say he’s fun to be with. But you know no one is complete right. I had dated Adedeji many years ago. We had to break up cos I found out that he was seeing someone else and he lied about it to me. While we were dating then, I asked him if he was seeing someone else but his response was NO . When he showed up after a while again, I decided to give him another chance. Although I was skeptical about him due to what happened in the past but I had to go with the saying that says “the devil you knew is better than the devil you don’t”. It got to a point in the relationship that I was so committed. I already thought within me that he is the person I will eventually settle with. He wasn’t a perfect man but I felt I could manage his imperfections. In the course of the relationship I decided to visit him at Ibadan but I was shocked when he told me I couldn’t spend an extra night becaus...

NURTURING IMAGINATIONS

Image
“The world is but a canvas to our imagination”- Your imagination is the key to creating your dreams and building your future. I have come to realize that many people have lots of plans, ideas, information about so many things they desire to have and become in life but often times, they end up at achieving them. What does it mean to nurture? According to the oxford advanced learner’s dictionary,  to nurture is to care and protect somebody or something while they are growing and developing. It is also to have a feeling, an idea, a plan, etc. for a long time and encourage it to develop. For everything that you want to develop, you must nurture. Now talking about imagination.   Imagination is the capacity to produce images, ideas and sensations in the mind without any immediate input of the senses (such as seeing and hearing). The mind is the strongest tool for imagining. Imagination is a powerful force behind the creation process because before anything can be created,...
