OVERCOMING YOUR FEARS

According to Wikipedia, Fear is defined as an emotion induced by a threat perceived by living entities which causes a change in brain and organ function and untimely a change in behavior, such as running away, hiding or freezing from traumatic events.
Celestine Chua also said that “all of us have fears, fears of uncertainty, fears of public speaking, and fears of risk…all
our fears keep us in the same position and prevent us from growing. Recognize that your fears reflect areas where you can grow. I always think of fears as the compass for growth. If I have a fear about something, it represents something I am yet to address and addressing it helps me to grow”

I remember clearly when I was a kid, there was an incident that happened at my school, though I wasn’t present in school that day but my elder sister told me about the incident, she said a witch was caught in my school, that the witch got into one of the classrooms and threw a stone at one of the pupil but fortunately the witch was caught and was almost stoned to death…hearing the word “witch” alone gave me a sleepless night. I couldn’t sleep; it was as if I was seeing the witch trying to throw a stone at me. Days after, the incident had great effect on me, I couldn’t stay in the dark alone, I was always scared to walk alone at night…FEAR.
As a young lady now, I realize that sometimes, I have fears about some certain things, fear of achieving purpose, fear of engaging in the right relationship/friendship, fear of getting married to the right man, sometimes the list is endless…
Some of us grew up with fears of so many things; we grew up with some culture and traditions that have come to create some fears in us. So many people are not growing today due to some of the things they had been taught in the past. Many have fears of demon & ghost, existence of evil powers, cockroaches, spiders, snakes, heights, water, social rejection, fear of death, fear of being a failure, fear of making mistakes, fear of being alone, fear of the future, fear of the unknown, fear of intimacy, fear of rejection…..the list of these fears is endless…
Many have piled up a lot of fears in their heart, I think it is time for you and I to address them now…our fears had pushed us to doing things that we don’t want to do, the fears that some people had has affected their self-esteem. Many have dug their hands in filthy things because of their fears.
Fear helps us to see our blind spots, those things that makes us fear, helps us to grow if properly addressed. When we allow fear to overshadow our positive thoughts, it brings set-backs and reduces our pace in achieving our aims. It brings about self-discouragement, you begin to feel scared every time you want to do something meaningful and thus it affects your self-esteem as an individual.
How can we overcome our fears?
  • Identify your fears: take your time to find out/identify/mark out those things that creates fear in you. You can list them out so as to be able to address them one after the other.
  • After identifying them, think of how these fears have affected you, ask yourself questions and find out why you are scared of them. Then be prepared to overcome them with courage and confidence
  • Develop your emotions strongly and learn to encourage yourself
  •  Build up your self-esteem and have a positive mindset that you can overcome your fears.
  • Face your fears: so many times, we are always scared of facing our fears; those things that affect our emotions and bring about anxiety can be conquered if only we can face them. Be bold, be courageous and let your mind be sound.
Remember the Bible says that 2Timothy 1:7 “For God did not give us a spirit of timidity (of cowardice, of craven and cringing and fawning fear), but [He has given us a spirit] of power and of love and of calm and well-balanced mind and discipline and self-control”.
The Bible is a great tool to overcome your fears, it consists of so many scriptures that can help to encourage you and strengthen you in days when fears come. Below are some scriptures for personal use (Proverbs 3:25, Isaiah 11:2, Isaiah 35:4, Isaiah 41:10, Isaiah 44:8, Isaiah 54:14, 1John 4:18) you can also search the scripture for more Bible references to help you during your fearful days. Make them your confessions and with time, you will overcome your fears. Have a great day. Cheers
