THE BROKEN CALABASH
I want to take a journey back into the
ancient times, the times of our fore fathers. When there was no technology or
any form of advancement in the world, when things were done according to our
culture and tradition.
My
mum explained to me how marriage rites were carried out. How a woman is meant
to keep herself and remain a virgin before marriage. She also explained to me
how the groom’s family pays a woman’s dowry/bride price and takes items to the bride’s
parent. Am sure some of you know this history.
After
the marriage ceremony, the man always return back to his people and the brides
people to tell them if his wife is a virgin or not. if the wife is a virgin,
after the first intercourse on the wedding night, he uses a white piece of
cloth to clean the blood that comes from the woman’s sexual organ. He then
takes the piece of cloth to his family and the bride’s parent telling them he
married a complete woman. But if he did not meet her as a virgin, he sends a
broken calabash/pieces of a broken clay pot to her family telling them that he married an
incomplete woman.
In
some cases, the man sends the bride back to her parents and in some rare cases,
the man protects his wife by covering
the incident due to the love and affection he has and then lives with her; Although
some family tradition is against this.
When something breaks, it has
different meaning but I will prefer to use a meaning that says “to be damaged
and separated into two or more parts as a result of force”. I understand that
guys think that only a lady can be referred to as a broken calabash but I strongly
disagree. I disagree not because am a lady but because this situation applies
to all. Leaving virginity out of this, many parts of a man’s life can be
broken. Some parts of our lives can be likened to a broken piece or calabash.
What
is that part of your life that has been damaged or separated into two as a
result of force? This force could be physical or spiritual depending on the situation. Recall one of my previous posts that talks about the mind. I believe
that a broken calabash can be moulded to become a fine calabash that has no crack.
All
you have to do is to pick up the pieces and arrange them together using fine
clay. Remember also the muddy ground that is used eventually to make beautiful
things. Is it part of your job that is
broken? Is it part of your marriage, part of your relationship, part of your
dreams or career? Common!!! Pick up the pieces.
Are
you almost given up? Are you already planning to return that calabash
because part of it is broken? Well, remember that there is no problem without a
solution.
That
part of the calabash that is broken is going to be a testimony soon. Open your
eyes clearly to see the ideas behind the broken part of that calabash. Apply wisdom
and make good use of the idea.
Think
about the mystery of the calabash and discover the secrets and solutions behind it.CHEERS
